With Monarch: Legacy of Monsters now streaming on Apple TV+, fans of the MonsterVerse wish to know where and when it takes place in the Godzilla timeline. Is it a sequel or a prequel to Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Kong? Here’s all you need to know about Monarch’s timeline.
When does Monarch: Legacy of Monsters in the Godzilla timeline?
Spanning several years from 1952 to 2015, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is both a sequel and a prequel to Godzilla (2015) and Kong: Skull Island. But it definitely takes place before Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is intricately tied with the first Godzilla movie and also connects with Kong: Skull Island. As the opening clip revealed, the first episode begins in the middle of a Mother Longlegs vs. Mantleclaw battle during Kong: Skull Island in 1973.
It then moves to 2013 for a relatively short section. However, the major chunk of the narrative takes place in April 2015 after Godzilla fought MUTO. Members of a newly introduced Randa family and an old Lee Shaw act as the leads in this era.
Parallely, we’re also shown events from the 1950s involving young Lee Shaw and a couple of Monarch researchers, Keiko and William. How all the events of these aforementioned years connect with each other remains to be seen in future episodes.
Do Godzilla & Kong appear in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters?
Kong appears in the camera footage recorded during the events of Skull Island. But Monarch’s trailers confirmed that Godzilla will also appear in new scenes besides a 2015 flashback.
Legacy of Monsters depicts Monarch’s findings about Godzilla and several other titans. But it mostly follows the Randa family and establishes their secret connection to Monarch.
We expect to see a few monsters sprinkled across the show’s ten episodes. Whether Kong appears in some new footage in its future episodes isn’t confirmed yet. But Godzilla will definitely have new scenes as teased by the promotional material.
