Marvel Studios recently unveiled a new MCU banner called Marvel Spotlight at a recent press event for Echo, and fans want to know everything about this new banner. Here is all you need to know.
What is Marvel Spotlight?
According to Marvel Studios, Marvel Spotlight is a new banner or sub-category for upcoming MCU projects released by Marvel Studios that will not necessarily tie into and reference larger plot threads of the MCU.
What this basically means is that fans or new MCU viewers will not need to have seen any prior MCU movies or television shows to prepare for any upcoming releases that fall under the Marvel Spotlight banner. For instance, viewers will not need to have seen Hawkeye to understand Echo, which will premiere in January 2024 and will be the first MCU project to fall under the Marvel Spotlight banner.
Additionally, according to Brad Winderbraum, the Marvel Studios Head of Streaming, Marvel Spotlight is a platform for Marvel Studios to bring their more character-driven, grounded storylines to screens. He also said that Echo, unlike MCU movies and shows that fall under the regular Marvel Studios banner, will focus on street-level stakes instead of events affecting the larger MCU continuity.
The Marvel Spotlight sub-category of MCU projects was inspired by two anthology comic-book runs of the same name published by Marvel Comics between November 1971 and April 1977 and July 1979 and March 1981. These Marvel Spotlight comic book runs stood out from other comic book runs published by Marvel as most of the characters featured in this comic series such as Ghost Rider, Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman, and Werewolf by Night, made their first appearance in the series.
Which MCU projects fall under Marvel Spotlight?
As of now, Echo is the first and only MCU project currently confirmed to fall under Marvel Spotlight.
Aside from Echo, however, fans can also expect shows like Daredevil: Born Again and Agatha: Darkhold Diaries to fall under this category, given how they will likely also be grounded or character-driven stories and, in the former’s case, focusing solely on streel-level stakes.
