Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen rules over the fandom’s heart for many reasons. One of the reasons that makes the series so incredible is how the antagonists have just as much influence over the narrative as the protagonists do.
Among the host of antagonists, Ryomen Sukuna, a legendary cursed spirit, probably emerges as the most captivating one. Not much is known about his origin or the story behind his transformation into a cursed spirit – a factor which adds to the mysterious charm surrounding the character.
Originally a powerful but malignant sorcerer from ancient Japan, Sukuna was considered indomitable. As per the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, he got a hold of immense strength and cursed energy through his use of jujutsu techniques. He also used dark rituals that allowed him to become a sorcerer of extraordinary caliber. However, given that his actions were quite evil, he earned the reputation of being dangerous.
Eventually, he defeated and killed a group of sorcerers who somehow sealed his cursed power into 20 fingers. As seen in the series, these fingers contain some of his formidable abilities, making them powerful cursed objects. Since their existence posed a great threat to humankind, the plot of the anime centers around finding each of these fingers to prevent Sukuna’s revival.
Is Sukuna the strongest curse ever?
The sealing of Sukuna’s powers and evil being into the cursed fingers transformed him into a cursed spirit. These fingers were scattered all across Japan. When consumed by sorcerers, Sukuna can resurrect, either partially or fully, as seen in the case of Yuji Itadori. The transformation can thus lead to intense and unpredictable battles. Sukuna earned the title of the ‘King of Curses’ over time. As it is, he currently stands as one of the strongest curses to ever exist within the Jujutsu Kaisen-verse.
However, fans need to note that the series features plenty of other powerful curses. These include high-grade, special-grade, and unique cursed spirits. Each has its distinct ability and strength, making these curses formidable.
When Sukuna faces powerful sorcerers and cursed spirits, it remains uncertain who is the strongest. This is because the challenges and dynamics vary based on the characters. This ongoing evolution of power dynamics implies that while Sukuna is undoubtedly formidable and even considered stronger than Awakened Rika in her prime, a battle between him and someone like Gojo would be unpredictable.
