Maeve’s mother, Erin Wiley, dies in Sex Education season 4.
Besides teenage drama, series creator Laurie Nunn added an extra layer of sadness to develop Maeve Wiley’s character by killing off her mother. In episode 3, Maeve heard about her mother’s unfortunate death from her brother Sean while she was studying in America.
It’s what brought Maeve back to the U.K. where she united with Otis and her brother. Erin Wiley died because of a drug overdose. The doctor at the hospital explained how she was admitted to the ICU, lost consciousness, and fell into a coma.
Maeve and Erin didn’t have the best of relationships, as the latter was mostly absent from her life. But their rocky relationship improved towards the end of season 3, where Erin pushed Maeve to pursue her studies in America. She even made it happen by giving her money.
Ultimately, Maeve was able to say her goodbyes as she scattered her mother’s ashes at the caravan park in the presence of Aimee and Isaac. Even though she didn’t live with her mother, her passing allowed Maeve to fully leave Moordale behind and move to America permanently, after her mutual break up with Otis.
Using this death element in the storyline, Laurie Nunn was able to add more depth to a show that mostly revolved around teenage relationships, as it left many viewers emotional.
