Yellowjackets Season 3 Release Date Rumors: When Is It Coming Out?

Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets is a thriller series airing on Showtime. The plot revolves around a New Jersey high school girls’ soccer team whose plane crashed in the Canadian wilderness in 1996. Faced with hostile weather and starvation, the survivors are forced to commit unspeakable things, including cannibalism. 25 years later, those who are still alive are haunted by their past.

Season 1 premiered on November 14, 2021, and was received extremely well by both the critics and the general audience. Season 2 debuted on March 26, 2023, and received a similar response. If you want to know when season 3 is coming out, you have come to the right place.

Here’s all the Yellowjackets season 3 release date information we know so far, and all the details on when it is coming out.

Is there a Yellowjackets season 3 release date?

Yellowjackets season 3 could arrive by the second half of 2024.

Yellowjackets was greenlit for season 3 in December 2022, about three months before the release of the second season. Chris McCarthy, President and CEO of Showtime and Paramount Media Networks, made the following statement.

“With Yellowjackets’ runaway success in season one and the pent-up anticipation for season two, we wanted to maximize the momentum by fast-tracking season three now. The show’s ambition is only exceeded by its execution, and I thank the incredible creative team behind it, including Ashley, Bart, Jonathan, eOne, and the Showtime team, for turning this into such a success.”

The writing for season 3 officially started on May 1, 2023, but stopped only a day later because of the WGA strike, which officially ended on September 27, 2023. Deadline subsequently reported that the writing room for Yellowjackets season 3 is set to resume in October.

The writing for season 2 reportedly began in May 2022, and the production lasted for over six months between August 2022 and February 2023. If the cast and crew are able to maintain the same pace during the production of season 3, the series will return in the second half of 2024. However, this can only happen if the SAG-AFTRA strike ends before the script is done. Otherwise, there will be a considerable delay in the release of season 3.

In June 2023, Ashley Lyle announced on Twitter (now known as X) that a bonus episode would be released between seasons 2 and 3. This means that the said episode can come out sometime in the winter of 2023. It is unknown whether this episode has already been filmed. If not, its production has likely been impacted by the strikes.

This date is an estimation based on the information we have at the time of this writing.

The cast includes Melanie Lynskey and Sophie Nélisse as the adult and teenage Shauna Shipman, Tawny Cypress and Jasmin Savoy Brown as the adult and teenage Taissa Turner, Steven Krueger as Ben Scott, Warren Kole as Jeff Sadecki, Christina Ricci and Samantha Hanratty as the adult and teenage Misty Quigley, Juliette Lewis and Sophie Thatcher as the adult and teenage Natalie “Nat” Scatorccio, Simone Kessell and Courtney Eaton as the adult and teenage Charlotte “Lottie” Matthews, Lauren Ambrose and Liv Hewson as the adult and teenage Vanessa “Van” Palmer, Kevin Alves as Travis Martinez, Elijah Wood as Walter Tattersall, and more.

Where is Yellowjackets season 3 coming out?

Yellowjackets season 3 is anticipated to come out on Showtime by the second half of 2024.

The official synopsis for Yellowjackets reads:

“This equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story, and coming-of-age drama tells the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later.”
