Viewers of No One Will Save You may be wondering why there is no dialogue or talking in the movie. Here’s what you need to know about almost no one speaking in the film.
Why is there no dialogue in No One Will Save You?
The choice to keep little to no dialogue in the film was deliberate, as it allows the viewers to have an immersive experience and figure out Brynn’s backstory on their own.
The film takes place from Brynn’s point of view. Since she had been shunned by her community and led a lonely lifestyle, there was no need to have dialogue for most of the film. We see Brynn communicating with her deceased best friend through letters. However, there is no actual talking as it was an artistic choice that writer-director Brian Duffield had made.
The film took a page out of the two A Quite Place movies, which also relied on mostly dialogue-less stories. Furthermore, the silence allowed Duffield to build up suspense and gave the audience a more immersive experience watching Brynn actor Kaitlyn Dever act her way through tough situations. There were certain scenes where we almost saw Brynn talk, but Duffield wrote them so she didn’t need to, and ultimately toyed with the audience.
He spoke with Entertainment Weekly and revealed how Kaitlyn Dever helped bring his almost dialogue-free story to life. He said:
“It was a character thing where this person really wants a community and doesn’t think she’s deserving of one. It felt like that device just amplified her character.”
He added:
“Most of the movie there’s not really a good reason for her to talk because she’s trying so hard to not make a sound. She’s not going to say, ‘It’s an alien in my house!’ Also, when you have Kaitlyn Dever, she doesn’t need to say anything. She can monologue with her eyes in a really impressive way.”
It’s worth noting that we did get a single line of dialogue towards the final act where Brynn apologized to Maude saying, “I’m sorry, Maude. I’m sorry.” Getting it at that moment felt like the film had earned it. But apart from that, no dialogue was actually needed.
Duffield mentioned a deleted scene with more dialogue in it. But, he removed it because it would have gone against his dialogue-less approach to the film.
