The Creator Box Office Results: Is it projected to flop?
Long-range box office projections for The Creator claim that it will open with $15-24 million domestically and end up totaling between $40-85 million. (via BoxOfficePro) However, the actual figures could differ drastically.
Considering that it was produced on a budget of $80 million (via Variety), it would need to earn between $250-300 million depending upon how much money gets spent on its marketing. With the domestic box office projections being so low, the movie’s success may be heavily dependent on the international markets. The odds seem stacked against it, but only time will tell.
The Creator is an original big-budget sci-fi story. History has proven that films of this kind don’t really work unless they have been directed by Christopher Nolan or some other big-name director, and feature a stellar cast.
While Gareth Edwards is a proven director himself, he still isn’t a household name like Nolan. Furthermore, his movies such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Godzilla worked in the past because the audience was vaguely familiar with what they were getting. The title of his latest film doesn’t really clarify what it is about and why moviegoers should flock to the theaters for it.
The only thing that could work in its favor is that coming out on September 29, as it doesn’t face a lot of competition throughout October. With that said, it is going head-on against Saw X, and will also take on The Exorcist: Believer soon after that. So, with no cast members allowed to promote the film, word of mouth around it will really have to work like a charm for its success. Fortunately for it, the early reactions have been great.
In Hollywood’s current state, late box office bloomers have become extremely rare. Long story short: The Creator has a high chance of being a box office bomb, despite seemingly being high on quality.
