Famed director Guillermo del Toro, known for classics like Pan’s Labyrinth and Pacific Rim, nearly directed a Star Wars movie.
On the newest episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, writer David Goyer revealed that he wrote a Star Wars movie that was going to be directed by del Toro, though it ended up never being made.
“I wrote an unproduced Star Wars movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct … that was about four years ago … dabbling in Star Wars would have been fun for me.”
Why didn’t Guillermo del Toro’s Star Wars movie happen?
When asked why the film fell through, Goyer stated that lots of things were happening behind-the-scenes at Lucasfilm at the time.
“There was just a lot of behind-the … stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time. But it’s a cool script … you’ll have to ask him [Guillermo del Toro] next time he’s on [the podcast.] It’s a cool script.”
The director retweeted the video clip from the podcast, noting that it was true and that he couldn’t say much, then mentioned the letters “J” and “BB” as hints. Though it’s unclear what this might refer to, replies speculate that del Toro could be referencing Jabba the Hutt or BB-8, given the stated letters.
This isn’t the first Guillermo del Toro project that would go unrealized despite fan enthusiasm. Some other films del Toro was reported to be involved in over the years included the Halo movie, a third Hellboy film, a movie based on Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride, and more.
