Roald Dahl’s The Twits is being adapted into an animated movie arriving on Netflix in 2025.
Netflix announced The Twits, a children’s novel written by Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake that was published in 1980, is being turned into an animated feature. The movie is helmed by Phil Johnston, who co-directed 2018’s Ralph Breaks the Internet and co-wrote the screenplay for 2016’s Zootopia.
Along with Johnston, The Twits is co-directed by Satie Shanahan and Todd Demong, with Meg Favreau serving as a co-writer. Johnston is also producing the film with Maggie Malone, while Daisy West is co-producing. Jellyfish Pictures is providing the animation.
What is Roald Dahl’s The Twits about?
“Mr. and Mrs. Twit are the meanest, smelliest, nastiest people in the world who also happen to own and operate the most disgusting, most dangerous, most idiotic amusement park in the world, Twitlandia,” the official synopsis reads. “But when the Twits rise to power in their town, two brave orphans and a family of magical animals are forced to become as tricky as the Twits in order to save the city. A hysterically funny, wild ride of a film (chock-full of the Twits’ beloved tricks–from the Wormy Spaghetti to the Dreaded Shrinks), The Twits is also a story for our times, about the never-ending battle between cruelty and empathy.”
“I’ve always been attracted to reprehensible characters,” Johnston said. “I don’t know what this says about me, and I really don’t want to look into it. Point is, The Twits was my favorite book when I was a kid. I love the Twits and their terrible tricks. I love that they lack self-awareness and personal hygiene and any inkling of human decency. And I love this movie because it reminds us that twits like the Twits, whose default emotions are anger and vengeance, can’t be allowed to win in our world.”
In September 2021, Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company. Having put out Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical in 2022, Netflix is also releasing Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (along with a handful of other Anderson short films based on Dahl’s work) in September 2023, while a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory animated series is also currently in development.
The Twits is coming to Netflix in 2025.
