The latest ad for The Exorcist: Believer homages one of the scariest videos ever posted on the internet, Ghost Car.
Blumhouse debuted a new ad for The Exorcist: Believer on Twitter with the caption, “Buckle up, you’re in for a ride.”
The video homages Ghost Car, a 20-second-long viral YouTube video posted 18 years ago. Ghost Car sees a car drive down a long, winding road before it disappears behind a patch of trees. Shortly after it reemerges, a demonic creature jumps out and screams at the camera.
The Exorcist: Believer arrives in October 2023
The Exorcist: Believer comes from Blumhouse and Halloween director David Gordon Green. It is the fifth film in The Exorcist franchise following 1973’s The Exorcist, 1977’s Exorcist II: The Heretic, 1990’s The Exorcist III, 2004’s Exorcist: The Beginning, and 2005’s Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. Believer is also the beginning of a new trilogy of Exorcist movies, with the second, The Exorcist: Deceiver, arriving in April 2025.
“Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Tony winner and Oscar® nominee Leslie Odom, Jr.; One Night in Miami, Hamilton) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett, Good Girls) on his own,” the official synopsis reads. “But when Angela and her friend Katherine (newcomer Olivia O’Neill), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn).”
Ann Dowd, Jennifer Nettles, and Norbert Leo Butz also star in the film, while the screenplay (based on a story by Green, Danny McBride, and Scott Teems) was written by Green and Peter Sattler.
The Exorcist: Believer hits theaters in the United States on October 6, 2023.
