The Nun 2: How Did Valak Become Evil?

While watching the recently released The Nun 2, many might wonder why Valak is so evil and torments Sister Irene so much. Well, there’s an explanation for that involving the creature’s nature. How did Valak become evil? Here’s what you need to know.

How did Valak become evil?

Valak is a fallen angel turned into a demon.

The answer to the question of why is Valak (portrayed by Bonnie Aarons in The Nun duology) evil is pretty simple. Valak is evil because it’s its nature to be so. As explained by Father Burke in The Nun, Valak was once an angel. The story didn’t explain what Valak did to lose his status as a celestial being, mentioning only that he was sent to Hell by St. Michael the Archangel.

When the Duke who built the Cârța Monastery evoked it, Valak came to Earth for the first time. The Vatican forces then sealed the demon thanks to the Blood of Christ for many years. During World War II, some bombs freed the demon from its prison. In The Conjuring Universe, Valak made its first appearance in The Conjuring 2, revealing itself as the over-arching villain of the franchise.

Is Valak real?

No, Valak isn’t real.

Valak is a fictional character created for horror entertainment. The Conjuring Universe villain does not have historical or religious significance outside of the fictional context of these films. It’s worth noting that Valak is not a part of traditional demonology or religious texts. You can sleep tight tonight, it won’t come to haunt your dreams.

The name does appear under several forms (Ualac, Volac, Valac) in ancient literary texts like Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (16th century) as well as The Lesser Key of Solomon (mid-17th century), among others, but it’s just a literary character.

The Nun 2 hit theaters on September 8, 2023.
