Starfield developer Q&A

Starfield Devs Offer New Details in Recent Q&A

With Starfield releasing next month, a pair of senior Bethesda developers recently sat down to answer fans’ questions on Discord. Quest designer Will Shen and lead designer Emil Pagliarulo shared info about Starfield’s setting, legal system, number of companions, and more.

As reported by Games Hub, the Discord Q&A revealed a fair amount of new information about Bethesda’s upcoming sci-fi action RPG. Among the revelations include the fact that Starfield will feature over 20 recruitable companions. Bethesda has revealed seven Starfield companions, including the robot Vasco, fellow Constellation members, an Adoring Fan, and more. However, it appears there are many more that fans have yet to meet.

Unfortunately, it also raises concerns about how unique and fleshed-out Starfield’s Companions can be when there are over 20. Still, Bethesda says Companions are a priority, and developers worked hard to integrate them into the main story.

Another fan asked if players would be able to complete a pacifist run. The answer was no, though there will be options to avoid combat in some situations. However, excessive violence may have consequences, as the developers used this opportunity to discuss law enforcement in Bethesda’s Starfield. Players who commit crimes may be arrested and fined or thrown in jail, similar how crime works in The Elder Scrolls. Jailed players must then either escape or serve out their sentence.

In addition, the developers also talked a bit more about Starfield’s setting. The game takes place over 300 years in the future, and Bethesda put a lot of thought into creating the galaxy’s culture. This includes religions, with the Sanctum Universum, The Enlightened, and The Great Serpent being humanity’s three main denominations. Each has a different set of gods and doctrines for players to learn about. Bethesda revealed some of these faiths before, and Starfield players can choose one during character creation. Doing so unlocks new interactions with these groups, including avoiding combat with their more radical elements.

Finally, Shen and Pagliarulo have some good news for aspiring homeowners. In addition to Starfield’s highly publicized colony building, players can also buy houses in major settlements.
