Report: Tom Cruise Trying to Get Barbie or Oppenheimer Release Dates Moved

Tom Cruise is reportedly trying to get the release dates for Barbie or Oppenheimer moved.

It’s a well-known fact within the film community that two widely anticipated movies are coming out on the same day: Christopher Nolan’s historical thriller, Oppenheimer, and Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy, Barbie, are both set to release on Friday, July 21, 2023. However, actor Tom Cruise reportedly has an issue with this.

When is the Mission: Impossible 7 release date?

Tom Cruise stars in the upcoming action spy film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, set to release on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. This release date is a little over a week before Barbie and Oppenheimer come out.

According to Puck News, Cruise has been complaining to Paramount executives about how Nolan’s Oppenheimer will be taking all IMAX screens in North America and other territories for three weeks following its release. This means fans hoping to watch the new Mission: Impossible movie only have nine days to see it in IMAX before every screen in this famous premium format is taken by Nolan’s historical epic.

With the seventh Mission: Impossible movie featuring a nearly $300 million budget and getting pushed back multiple times due to COVID, it is no wonder why Tom Cruise wants an optimal release window for his film. The fact that Oppenheimer is releasing so soon after Mission: Impossible 7 might have an impact on box office numbers, especially with its IMAX screens.

Last year’s Tom Cruise film, Top Gun: Maverick, grossed $110 million out of its $1.49 billion box office run on IMAX screens. This illustrates how fans will likely want to see Cruise’s death-defying stunts on the biggest screen possible, but this summer, they won’t have a lot of time for that. Despite Cruise’s efforts, the odds that Oppenheimer would be moved this late into the game is not promising.
