A Baywatch reboot is in the works, signaling that the iconic series could return.
According to Deadline, the production company Fremantle has already had early talks with a variety of broadcasters and streamers about the Baywatch reboot, although no official decisions have been made as of yet. Should the series be rebooted, it would be the first new television series for the show since 2001, when the series originally ended.
Originally premiering in 1989, Baywatch focused on a group of lifeguards who worked the beaches in Los Angeles, California. The series was created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz, and Gregory J. Bonann. It starred David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Alexandra Paul, Gregory Alan Williams, Parker Stevenson, Billy Warlock, Erika Eleniak, and Yasmine Bleeth, among others.
The popularity of the series was a huge catalyst for stars like Hasselhoff and Anderson becoming superstars in the 90s. After being canceled after just one season on NBC, Baywatch became extremely popular through syndication and would continue to air for a total of 11 seasons. During its run, it was one of the most-watched television series in the world, and due to the nature of the series, it was often parodied throughout other forms of entertainment.
A movie adaptation of the series was released in 2017 and starred Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandria Daddario, and David Hasselhoff.
