In the world of Lois Lowry’s The Giver, there are no colors, no emotions and no memories. Society has moved past them all, creating a world that, though free from disease, war and famine, has become permanently numb to the human spirit. The old ways of mankind are not wholly forgotten, however, thanks to the role of the Giver, one individual whose job it is to maintain the memories and, when the time is right, to pass them along to a receiver, a young man whose job it will be to become the new Giver.
Ever since the dystopic science fiction was originally published in 1993, Jeff Bridges has been trying to bring the story to the big screen. Originally planning to feature his father in the title role, Bridges now steps into the part himself, joining a cast that also includes Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites, Alexander Skarsgård, Katie Holmes, Odeya Rush, Cameron Monaghan and Taylor Swift.
