Ahead of its official release, Funimation has announced that it will be releasing the upcoming Josee, the Tiger and the Fish in select theaters around North America next month.

The coming-of-age film from Kotaro Tamura and studio Bones is set to launch in select North American theaters on July 12, 2021. The film was released in 2020 in Japan, but is getting a stateside release for fans of the critically acclaimed film. Since its release in Japan, the film has been nominated for “Best Animation” in the 75th Mainchi Film Awards, and “Animation of the Year” considerations for the 44th Japan Academy Film Prize.
“Tsuneo, an ordinary college student and avid diver, unexpectedly becomes the caretaker of a wheelchair-bound young woman in order to raise money for this dream to go diving in Mexico,” the official synopsis reads. “This young woman, who calls herself Josee after her favorite book character, is sullen and demanding, but as Tsuneo helps Josee interact with the outside world and learns more about Josee’s unique perspective, their feelings grow into love. The two begin to support each other in ways beyond just romance.”
The English dub features Howard Wang as Tsuneo, Suzie Yeung as Kumiko/Josee, Dani Chambers as Mai, and Zeno Robinson as Hayato.

Josee, the Tiger and the Fish is based on a 1985 short story by Akutagawa Prize-winning author Seiko Tanabe. Directed by Kotaro Tamura, the film will feature music composed by Evan Call (Violet Evergarden), with a Japanese cast that includes Taishi Nakagawa, Kaya Kiyohara, Kumiko Yamamura, Yume Miyamoto, and Kazuyuki Okitsu.
