Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter made quite a splash in Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, revealing herself to be the mysterious Power Broker in the finale of the series. Initially, VanCamp had no clue what was happening with her character, but once she found out just who Carter would be coming, things made more sense.

“When I found out that Sharon is in fact the Power Broker, it made perfect sense,” VanCamp said. “It really solidifies what all of this means for Sharon. We’re meeting this whole new version of her, and this kind of character, unfortunately, is the sad product of the series of events where she was abandoned and left to her own devices. It is very fitting that she was hurt and scorned and went rogue.”

The character of Sharon Carter has been away in the city of Madripoor for some time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and according to head series writer and executive producer Malcolm Spellman, this was crucial to the character as a whole. “Having Sharon be anchored in Madripoor meant this inherent intersection between who she was and who she’s going to become,” Spellman said.

VanCamp speculated on the future of the Power Broker, as the finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier saw Carter pardoned in the United States and plotting to cause even more chaos as the Power Broker.

“Obviously, she has a much bigger plan, and it’s not for the greater good like it used to be. As the person playing the character, I understand that perspective; she doesn’t trust the government anymore, and she wants to stick it to them a little bit. What that all means? I don’t know. We’ll see.”
