It’s amazing to think it’s already been 15 years since critics and audiences first fell in love with the Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn-starring Wedding Crashers. In the years since, a follow-up has been discussed and rumored and now director David Dobkin has revealed a possible story thread for a sequel.

In an interview with Collider to discuss his upcoming Netflix comedy, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, Dobkin discussed the long road since the film’s release and revealed that he, Wilson and Vaughn have turned down Warner Bros. multiple times on doing a sequel.
“Everybody keeps hitting me up about a Wedding Crashers sequel,” Dobkin said. “We don’t have a script that we’re there with yet. For many, many years every year I got offered to do the sequel, there were some very big deals on the table. And none of us wanted to do a retread of the same movie again. Anything within those first years that we talked about was the same movie, and we were like, ‘Why?’ Financially I probably shouldn’t have done that, but I did (laughs). And Vince and Owen didn’t want to do it either.”

Though he said the script isn’t there yet and there have been rumors of past story ideas including the lead duo going against a rival wedding crasher played by Daniel Craig (Knives Out), Dobkin did note that a few years back, he may have found a story thread that would actually embrace the passage of time since the 2005 film, while also pointing out that both Wilson and Vaughn have yet to read it and that “there’s no rush to go make that movie.”

“10 years later, when I was asked again and I hung up the phone after saying no, I thought about it and I’m like, ‘Well I’d be curious what it’d be like for guys in their late 40s who end up being single again and have to go back out in the world. What a weird, difficult, challenging story that is,’” Dobkin said. “And as long as there’s a real story in the middle of it, to me, it can be a movie.”
Written by Steve Faber and Bob Fisher (We’re the Millers), Wedding Crashers focused on John Beckwith (Wilson) and Jeremy Grey (Vaughn), Washington D.C. divorce mediators who crash weddings to seduce bridesmaids and other female guests who meet their match when they try to crash the wedding for the daughter of the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, William Cleary (Christopher Walken). Alongside Wilson, Vaughn, and Walken, the film featured an ensemble cast that included Rachel McAdams (Game Night), Isla Fisher (Tag), and Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born).
The 2005 film was a smash hit upon release, receiving strong reviews from critics for the chemistry between its leads and blend of raunchy humor and sweet storytelling, and grossed over $288 million worldwide on a $40 million budget, helping revive the R-rated comedy genre.
