In the previous episode of NBC’s This Is Us, we glimpsed Kate’s grown-up son, Jack, a successful and blind musician. In This Is Us Season 4 Episode 2,Kate hired an expert to teach the family about raising a blind child, and Jack and Rebecca took their kids to the pool again.
Without Limits
Toby worried about how Kate handled the news of Jack’s permanent blindness. Kate acted unfazed, but Toby noticed that she was overeating and told Rebecca. Kate hired Anna to train the family in raising a blind child. When she explained that the new, large TV was to introduce Jack to a Steelers game, Kate had to leave the room to compose herself.
Kate walked in on Kevin talking to Jack. She’d heard him speaking on the baby monitor. Kevin wondered why Jack cried when he tried to hold him. Kate explained that she had to touch and speak to him first so Jack would know it was coming. After they left the nursery, Kate told the family that Jack would live without limits.
Ficus
Kevin bought a ficus because his sponsor told him that taking care of it would give him a sense of control. He worked with M. Night Shyamalan and was on the shortlist for a big movie filming in Chicago. He didn’t know if he would take it, since he wanted to be there for Kate. He was worried about Nicky, who wasn’t returning his calls. Kevin said that he was taking the role, as everyone thought he should, but he ended up at Nicky’s trailer.
Pearson Family Fun Day
Randall planned a Pearson Family Fun Day in Philadelphia before the kids started school. However, Deja reminded him that he had to ride the bus with her as he’d previously insisted. Randall wanted to make sure it was safe for her to do so by herself. Beth took Tess and Annie to the hair salon, since Tess wanted a dramatic haircut. Randall got nervous when a guy sat next to Deja and started talking to her. Beth was anxious about how Tess’s new style would turn out.
In the end, Randall agreed to let Deja take the bus by herself, as long as she texted him everyday as soon as she got to school. Beth was supportive of Tess’s hairstyle, but Tess appeared to be having second thoughts about it. Together, as part of the Pearson Family Fun Afternoon, they ran up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, like Rocky.
The Pool, Revisted
Jack and Rebecca took the kids to the pool, but they were now much older than when we first saw them at the pool in Season 1. Jack was thrilled to get five lounge chairs, but none of the kids wanted to hang out with them. Randall’s friends wanted to hang out with him and Kevin, who was obsessed with Rumpshaker. He embarrassed Randall when he exposed him as not knowing the words to the song. Meanwhile, two popular girls invited Kate to hang out with them. Rebecca was nervous about their intentions. They did play a prank on her, but Kate took it in stride. By the end of the day, the kids ended up on the lounge chairs.
