Every day for the month of October, Coming Soon is making a new horror movie recommendation for those eager to find a new frightening flick for Halloween. From the creepy goodness of a classy ghost story to a blood-spattered gorefest and everything in between, we’ll have something for every taste of horror. And today’s pick is…..
Jennifer’s Body
What’s Jennifer’s Body about: Everyone knows high school sucks, but what Jennifer’s Body argues is: What if it literally sucked? Like, what if the most popular girl in school was a vampire? The unlikely duo of nerdy, straight-A student Needy (Amanda Seyfried) and stuck-up, self-absorbed cheerleader Jennifer (Megan Fox) attempt to answer this question while trying to survive the school year… and each other.
Why Jennifer’s Body rules: Practically dismissed outright up on its release, it’s obvious what a difference ten years makes. Diablo Cody’s sharp dialogue and Karyn Kusama’s slick direction capture high school as a literal hell, perfectly and organically sending up the misogynistic attitudes that permeate throughout America’s patriarchal power structures—yes, which includes high school—an entire decade before studios were clamoring to do the same exact thing.
How scary is Jennifer’s Body: While it’s mostly an incredibly dark comedy, there are some genuinely gnarly sequences involving feeding times. Overall, though, you should be all right.
Be on the lookout for: Before he was making it big on Parks and Recreation and in Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt was playing Officer Roman Duda in Jennifer’s Body.
