A Complete Guide to Every Pokémon in Detective Pikachu

Pokémon Detective Pikachu was a smash hit at the box office, earning over $431 million worldwide and delighting old school Pokémon fans while introducing the world to a new generation. To celebrate the release of Detective Pikachu on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital, we created a guide of every live-action Pokémon that appears in the movie. The Detective Pikachu movie’s eclectic cast consists of Golden Globe nominee Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) as the titular talking Pokemon with Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies), Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai), Suki Waterhouse (Assassination Nation), Rita Ora (Fifty Shades Freed) and Golden Globe winner Bill Nighy (Gideon’s Daughter). Smith stars as a teen whose father is kidnapped which leads him to Reynolds’ Pikachu and Kathryn Newton as a young journalist who team up in order to find him.

Goosebumps helmer Rob Letterman is on directing duty while Mary Parent (The Revenant) and Cale Boyter are producing the film for Legendary Entertainment. The screenplay was written by Letterman and Nicole Perlman.

Pikachu

The star of the show (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), is an Electric-type Pokémon who has the ability to talk to Tim (Justice Smith) and loves his detective cap. These traits in the movie him apart from his video game and animated series predecessors.
Mewtwo

A significant character in the movie, Mewtwo is a Psychic-type Pokémon that is genetically modified from Mew. The storyline really kicks off after the Pokémon escapes from a lab, serving as one of the antagonists in the film.
Psyduck

Psyduck is a Water-type Pokémon with psychic abilities. Prone to headaches that can be dangerous, the Pokémon is reporter Lucy Stevens (Kathryn Newton) partner as well as the movie's comic relief.
Jigglypuff

Jigglypuff is a Normal/Fairy-type Pokémon that is less than impressed when their singing puts a customer to sleep in the movie's cafe scene.
Mr. Mime

This mime is a Psychic/Fairy-type Pokémon that is able to manipulate air molecules into creating actual invisible barriers and gives Pikachu and Tim a bit of a tough time during an interrogation.
Aipom

The three-fingered tail gives the Normal-type Pokémon excellent agility, which makes them a nightmare when they turn feral in the movie.
Growlithe

The Fire-type Pokémon has a canine appearance and is seemingly part of the the K9 Unit for the Ryme City police in the film.
Arcanine

The Arcanine is a Fire-type Pokémon that evolves from a Growlithe when it receives a fire stone. Like the Growlithe, the Arcanine works alongside the Ryme City police in Detective Pikachu.
Bulbasaur

The Grass/Poison-type Pokémon plays a big part in the movie when a herd of Bulbasaurs help Tim save Pikachu.
Venusaur

This Pokémon is the evolved version of Bulbasaur featuring a blooming flower on its back. A Venusaur is seen strolling through the outdoor market place and at the train station at the end of the movie.
Ditto

This Normal-type Pokémon is capable of rearranging its cell structure to transform itself into other shapes. Who knows how many times it appeared on Detective Pikachu?
Magikarp

This Water-type Pokémon is really only useful for flopping around and splashing. Thanks to Pikachu, though, it evolves into the large and powerful Gyarados during the underground fight club scene.
Gyarados

Evolved from a Magikarp, the Gyarados is a Water/Flying-type Pokémon that develops a violent nature thanks to its brain cells undergoing a structural transformation during its evolution process.
Charmander

This adorable Fire-type Pokémon does not take on any big parts in the movie but does appear in a few scenes.
Charizard

Charmander's final evolution comes in the form of this Fire/Flying-type Pokémon. In the movie, Charizard battles Pikachu in an underground fight club and is owned by a trainer named Sebastian.
Greninja

The Water/Dark-type Pokémon is the final evolution of the Froakie Pokémon. Resembling frog-like qualities, the Greninja shows up during the lab scene in the movie utilizing its Water Shuriken.
Pidgeot

The Normal/Flying-type Pokémon has a striking plumage and play a very big part in the final fight scene at the end of the movie.
Squirtle

These Water-type Pokémon work as firefighers in Ryme City and also appears watching other Pokémon battle in the fight club scene.
Blastoise

The final evolution of a Squirtle, this Water-type Pokémon has powerful water cannons at its disposal, which come in handy as they battle a group of Gengar in the fight club sequence.
Bouffalant

The Normal-type bull Pokémon is well-known for its protective afro hair and charging with its horns. The creature appears in and out of Ryme City and also shows up during the movie's final battle.
Braviary

Spotted flying overhead near the beginning of the movie, this Normal/Flying-type Pokémon is known for its colorful feathers and protecting its friends from enemies.
Cubone

In the opening sequence of the movie, this Ground-type Pokémon, who sadly wears the skull of its dead mother, is introduced and does not at all take a liking to Tim.
Eevee

The Normal-type Pokémon can evolve with the help of radiation from various stones. Eevee has an unstable genetic makeup that suddenly mutates due to the environment, and appears in a scene with Howard Clifford (Bill Nighy).
Flareon

This Fire-type Pokémon is one of the evolutions of an Eevee. Flareon's are created when an Eevee is exposed to a fire stone. Its fur also releases heat so the fluffy Pokémon doesn't become excessively hot.
Lickitung

Tim gets up close and personal with this Normal-type Pokémon when the Lickitung licks his face on the train. These Pokémon rely on their tongues as weapons as well as a sensory organ.
Ludicolo

The Water/Grass-type Pokémon serves as the final evolution of a Lotad. The Ludicolo's preference for music isn't displayed in the movie, instead appearing as a cafe worker who yells and serves coffee.
Pancham, Pangoro

Pancham is a Fighting-type Pokémon who appear as cuddly, Panda-like creatures that pop up a number of times during Detective Pikachu. Pangoro are larger Fighting/Dark-type Pokémon that evolve from the Pancham.
Loudred

These Normal-type Pokémon are hard to miss with their giant ears and mouths that appear in the movie as a DJ's speakers during the underground fight club scene.
Snorlax

The most relatable of the group, this Normal-type Pokémon will eat whatever it wants and hibernate anywhere, including Ryme City's busy streets.
Snubball

Partnered with Lieutenant Hide Yoshida (Ken Watanabe) in the movie, this Fairy-type Pokémon is not nearly as grumpy as it appears.
Machamp

Putting its extra buff limbs to use, this Fighting-type Pokémon is the final evolution of the Machop and directs traffic in the movie.
Togepi

The Fairy-type Pokémon absorbs the positive emotions of compassion and pleasure from people and other Pokémon to feed its own energy. The Togepi likes to store happiness in its shell before sharing it with others, making his presence alongside his trainer at the underground fight club a little bizarre.
Morelull

These sentient mushrooms are Grass/Fairy-type Pokémon that you can see floating above the group of Bulbasaur that help Tim and Pikachu in the movie.
Joltik

These Bug/Electric-type Pokémon are tiny, spider-like creatures that are known to absorb static electricity from bigger Pokémon. They appear in a couple scenes in the movie, including hanging out on some power lines.
Torterra

Small and (very) large versions of this Grass/Ground-type Pokémon appear in the movie, dwelling underground and causing literal shifts in the environment.
Treecko

The Grass-type Pokémon is an excellent climber with sharp claws that appears in a few settings in the movie, including at the underground fight club and Tim's father's apartment building.
Sneasel

The Dark/Ice-type Pokémon are known for scaling trees by punching their hooked claws into the bark, as well as stealing unguarded eggs for food. Sneasels apparently thrive in Ryme City as they are scattered throughout the movie.
Purrloin

This Dark-type Pokémon act cute but are quick with their claws. Like many of the other Pokémon in Detective Pikachu, the Purrloin appears at the underground fight club.
Pidgeotto, Flabebe, Comfey

These three Pokémon can be spotted flying in the skies above Ryme City in the movie. The Pidgeotto is a Normal/Flying-type Pokémon and is the final evolution of the Pidgey. Flabebe is a Fairy-type Pokémon that prefers living in their respective flower in order to draw energy from the plant. Finally, Comfey is also a Fairy-type Pokémon that can be seen floating above the group of Bulbasaurs in addition to soaring above the city.
Golurk

Appearing in the background of a few scenes, this Ground/Ghost-type Pokémon is a guardian created by an ancient civilization. The seal on the Golurk's chest prevent the Pokémon from losing control of its energy reserves.
Emolga

The squirrel-like creatures are Electric/Flying-type Pokémon that can shock their prey while gliding through the air. Emolgas pop up in a few settings in the movie, including the outdoor market, the parade, and the fight club.
Rufflet

This Normal/Flying-type Pokémon has puffy feathers and wickedly strong talons, which might come in handy as the Pokémon waits its turn in the movie's underground fight club arena.
Dodrio

Incapable of flight, this Normal/Flying-type Pokémon has three heads with their own brains. The birds with the multi-personalities can be seen at the beginning of the film and walking by the screen when Tim makes his way through Ryme City.
Rattata

Hanging around the underground fight club scene in the movie, Rattata is a Normal-type Pokémon rodent that is known for being extra cautious and will live anywhere.
Gengar

The creature with the borderline creepy grin is a Ghost/Poison-type Pokémon who battles a Blastoise in the underground fight club arena in the movie.
Octillery

The Octillery are a Water-type Pokémon that uses its tentacles and ink in battle. The octopus-like Pokémon can be seen working away at one of the stands in the outdoor market.
Audino

Hanging out in the movie's outdoor market scene, this Normal-type Pokémon has stethoscope-like ears that allow it to sense the heartbeats of others. A medical career seems ideal for this Pokémon.
Graveler

This Rock/Ground-type Pokémon grows by feeding on rocks and, unsurprisingly, appears during the movie's fight club scene.
Totodile

The Water-type Pokémon is small and equipped with very powerful jaws capable of causing serious injury. Viewers will spot the croc welcoming visitors to Ryme City in a public service announcement.
Slaking

Resembling a sloth, this Normal-type Pokémon lazes around all day and can be spotted briefly in a handful of scenes in the movie.
