Danny Boyle Reveals What the Surviving Beatles Thought of Yesterday

Now that Danny Boyle’s ‘life without The Beatles‘ fantasy, Yesterday, is out in theaters, the director revealed that he’d sent copies of the film to the surviving members of the original Fab Four. In an interview with USA Today, Boyle opened up about what the former moptops thought of his latest endeavor.

We sent everyone the finished film, and we got a lovely message from Ringo and Barbara [Bach], and a lovely message back from Olivia [Harrison], George’s widow. I don’t think Paul’s seen the film yet but he saw and liked the trailer.”

In real life, The Beatles officially broke it off back in 1970. 10 years later, co-frontman John Lennon was shot and killed outside his home in New York City in December of 1980. Then, in 2001, guitarist George Harrison succumbed to lung cancer. The surviving two, co-frontman Paul McCartney and drummer Ringo Starr, are still enjoying life in the public eye, as well as thriving careers.

Yesterday stars Jack Malik (Himesh Patel, BBC’s Eastenders) as a struggling singer-songwriter in a tiny English seaside town whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading, despite the fierce devotion and support of his childhood best friend, Ellie (Lily James, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again). Then, after a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed … and he finds himself with a very complicated problem, indeed.

Performing songs by the greatest band in history to a world that has never heard them, and with a little help from his steel-hearted American agent, Debra (Emmy winner Kate McKinnon), Jack’s fame explodes. But as his star rises, he risks losing Ellie — the one person who always believed in him. With the door between his old life and his new closing, Jack will need to get back to where he once belonged and prove that all you need is love.

Yesterday is now playing in theaters everywhere.
