Director Joe Wright is revisiting WWII. The Darkest Hour and Atonement director is in final talks to helm In the Garden of Beasts, according to Variety. The film is an adaptation of author Erik Larson’s 2011 novel of the same name.
The book is based on the true story of William Dodd, a Chicago professor who becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany, prior to the Nazis invasion of Europe. Upon their arrival, his family embraces life in Berlin, but Dodd soon learns of reports of violence against Jews. His dispatches to the State Department are met with indifference and grows concerned with the growing press censorship and the passage of shocking laws. Before long, he discovers the horrific genocide that Hitler had already been planning.
Tom Hanks is currently in discussion to play Dodd, though the Saving Private Ryan star may simply produce the film.
Wright, meanwhile, is in post-production for his upcoming feature Woman in the Window. The adaptation of A.J. Finn’s crime novel stars Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Anthony Mackie, as well as Darkest Hour star Gary Oldman. The film will hit theaters starting October 4 of this year.
