In the previous episode of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Susie was working hard to bring in money by booking Midge for gigs. In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2 Episode 4, Midge’s yearly family vacation to a resort in the Catskills disrupts her plans for two months.
Sash Girl
Midge’s separation from Joel had disrupted her usual summer routine at Steiner Resort. Formerly an eight-time winner of the Mrs. Steiner swimsuit competition, she could no longer participate. Their resort friends were taking sides and asking uncomfortable questions. During orientation, Joel interrupted Pauly, who ran the resort, to tell everyone to stop staring at them and to shame Pauly for not letting Midge participate.
Romper
Unfortunately, Joel had forgotten to reserve a separate room for himself. He would be staying in the Weissmans’ sun porch until a room opened up when he came up on weekends. Abe talked to him about his early morning exercise routine. He warned Joel that he would likely see him in a romper. Abe clearly enjoyed a specific routine in the Catskills as he tried and failed to moderate his alcohol consumption and stressed out over not having his regular boy Jimmy to assist him.
The Boy Rows
At the salon, Rose asked Midge if she was dating. She had assumed that was the reason Midge went out a lot at night, when it was really for her stand-up gigs. Midge lied and said she was playing the field. During Rose’s next salon visit, she overheard Ida talk about how her son Benjamin was too picky with women. Benjamin wanted to date a “weird” girl, so naturally Rose wanted to set him up with Midge.
Throughout their activities, Rose kept talking to Midge about Benjamin. Wanting to get her mother off her back, Midge approached him to do an activity together. They went boating, but Benjamin refused to row.
One evening, the Weissmans laid out a blanket to watch the fireworks. Joel declined to join them and ended up smoking with Benjamin. Joel asked him what he thought of forgiveness, and Benjamin told him it didn’t matter. He preferred to be alone.
Plumber
Susie had followed Midge to the Catskills. She was trying to book Midge for gigs out there. Susie disguised herself as a plumber so she could freely walk around the resort, and no one questioned her. She was able to get free food at the employee mess hall and even scored her own bunk in the female employee cabin.
