True Detective Season Three Eyes Mahershala Ali

Mahershala Ali is reportedly in talks to lead True Detective season three

Although the series’ return still does not have the official green light at HBO, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali is in talks to lead True Detective season three. Ali took home his Oscar for his supporting role in last year’s acclaimed Best Picture winner, Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight. He’s also well known for his roles on House of Cards and Marvel‘s Luke Cage. He’s no stranger to HBO, either, having previously starred on Treme.

It was previously reported that two episodes of True Detective season three have already been written by creator Nic Pizzolatto for a possible pickup. The cable network show has been off the air for two years so far. Emmy Award winning writer David Milch, best known for creating and writing shows like NYPD Blue (co-created with Steven Bochco), Deadwood and Luck, is also on board as a writer.

The first two seasons of True Detective were a ratings success, but the second season had some trouble living up to the critical acclaim of season one. Matthew McConaughey, who starred in the first season of the show, has previously spoken out about his willingness to reprise his role. Pizzolatto, who is under contract with HBO through 2018, is currently developing a Perry Mason series with Robert Downey Jr. for the cable network.

The first season of True Detective starred McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, with the second starring Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams.

Coming up, Mahershala Ali can be seen in Robert Rodriguez‘s Alita: Battle Angel and, should the long-gestating project finally get off the ground, the J.C. Chandor-helmed Triple Frontier.
