Herbie reboot TV series is in development at Disney XD
A TV series based on the character of Herbie the love bug is in the works at Disney XD, according to TVLine. The character of Herbie first appeared in the 1968 film The Love Bug and returned in 1974’s Herbie Rides Again, 1977’s Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, 1980’s Herbie Goes Bananas, the 1997 TV film The Love Bug starring Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead) and 2005’s Herbie Fully Loaded which starred Lindsey Lohan (Mean Girls). He also appeared in a single season of a TV series in 1982 called Herbie, the Love Bug.
The anthropomorphic Volkswagen Beetle is known for his red, white and blue racing stripes and the number 53 painted on the side. Travis Braun (Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders) will reportedly write the possible series and will executive produce with Tom Burkhard and Matt Dearborn. The gender of the lead role has yet to be set and the show is looking for either a girl or a boy to play Lili or Landon Reed. The character is described as, “part scientist, part entrepreneur, part daredevil.” Lili/Landon’s parents have gone missing and the character discovers that they’ve been part of a secret government project dealing with a talking car named Herbie. Criminals are on the trail of this secret project as well.
The first film starred Dean Jones (Clear and Present Danger), Michele Lee (Along Came Polly), David Tomlinson (Mary Poppins) and Buddy Hackett (The Little Mermaid). The 2005, in addition to Lindsey Lohan, starred Justin Long (Drag Me to Hell), Breckin Meyer (Road Trip), Matt Dillion (There’s Something About Mary) and Michael Keaton (Spider-Man: Homecoming).
