In addition, details on the plot for the new season was revealed such as Will Byer’s visions of the Upside Down.
“He seems to be seeing images from the Upside Down—the question is whether they’re real or not,” says co-creator Matt Duffer. “So it seems like he’s having some sort of post-traumatic stress disorder.”
The outlet also revealed that Winona Ryder’s Joyce has a new love interest with Sean Astin as an old high school classmate named Bob. There’s also the arrival of the new brother-sister pair of Billy and Max, played by Dacre Montgomery and Sadie Sink, with Billy becoming a new antagonist to the boys and Max something of a love interest for Lucas and Dustin.
Chief of Police Jim Hopper will be busy in the new season as he tries to keep the events of the first season a secret.
“It kind of falls on Hopper to be the voice of authority to say, ‘This did happen and this didn’t happen,’” David Harbour said. “He’s struggling with the compromise that takes him to, having to lie and cover things up.”
There’s also the matter of Paul Reiser’s Dr. Owens, the new man in charge of the city’s mysterious Lab, but also Dustin’s new pet that’s not of this Earth.
“It’s a little creature I get to bond with,” says Matarazzo. “It’s obviously not from this planet or this dimension.”
And where has Eleven gone to? “I want people to know that she’s back and she’s a major part of the season and not know how or why,” says Duffer. “We do get into her story and backstory. We learn about where she came from and how she came into the world and the program that resulted in her.”
The second season, which will premiere on Halloween 2017, is set a year after Will’s return, and everything seems back to normal… but a darkness lurks just beneath the surface, threatening all of Hawkins.
Stranger Things Season 2 will star Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Cara Buono, Charlie Heaton, and Matthew Modine. New cast additions include Sadie Sink (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Dacre Montgomery (the Red Ranger in the upcoming Power Rangers movie), Brett Gelman (Blunt Talk, The Other Guys), newcomer Linnea Berthelsen, and ’80s icons Sean Astin (The Goonies) and Paul Reiser (Aliens).
