In the previous episode of Hulu’s The First, Denise struggled with seeing her father with another woman. The First season 1 episode 5 showed the Hagerty family’s journey up until the failed Mars mission.
Duct Tape
When Hagerty and Diane met, she designed a tattoo of her face and tattooed it onto him. They fell in love and had Denise. When she was little, Hagerty stopped Denise from drawing on the walls with her crayons. Diane argued that he was stifling her creativity, so he painted chalkboard onto the walls of Denise’s room.
Diane and Denise dealt with Hagerty being gone for months at a time for his trips to the moon. Eventually, Diane was diagnosed with and medicated for depression. She stayed in the bedroom and slept while Laz came over to show Hagerty the concept for the Mars mission he would be on in six years. While Denise was home, Diane walked outside toward the river. She drowned herself, and they never found the body.
Rehab
Denise wanted to defer her first semester at college in New York, but Hagerty convinced her to go. She started using drugs and eventually overdosed. Hagerty checked her into rehab, but we soon saw her still spiraling. Hagerty moved her out of her boyfriend’s place and back into rehab.
Hagerty was on the phone with Laz. Dealing with Denise’s drug problems was disrupting his training for the Mars mission. He noticed a mirror where lines of cocaine had been, and he hung up with Laz to look for Denise. She had broken into her mother’s tattoo shop to sit in one of her chairs. They argued, and Denise left. Since Haggerty had injured himself in his confrontation with Denise, he went to the doctor. There, Laz called him and officially told him he had been replaced as mission commander.
Layers
In present day, Denise worked on a painting of her mother. Throughout the episode, she layered the paint on. At the end, she scraped the paint off, destroying the painting of her mother. Denise then went to a rave where she had drugs injected into her.
