It was 50 years ago tonight that “The Man Trap” became the first broadcast episode of the original Star Trek when it aired on NBC September 8, 1966. Since then, the franchise has had five different television spin-offs and more than a dozen feature films. A new television series is also on the way in 2017 with Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, American Gods) serving as co-creator and executive producer.

On the big screen, Paramount recently delivered the third chapter in the rebooted Star Trek timeline. J.J. Abrams, who directed the last two Star Trek films, served as producer on Star Trek Beyond, directed by Justin Lin. Boasting a script by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, Star Trek Beyond features the return of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho along with new roles for Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella and Joe Taslim.
Star Trek, the first film in the rebooted franchise based on “Star Trek,” created by Gene Roddenberry, earned more than $380 million worldwide in 2009. The second installment, Star Trek Into Darkness, earned more than $460 million worldwide when it opened in May 2013.
It was confirmed shortly before Star Trek Beyond opened that plans are underway for a fourth film in the reboot series that will somehow bring back Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk.
