A set photo posted by Comic Book Movie from the set of X-Men: Dark Phoenix reveals a familiar game. The image, which was taken during the film’s reshoots, shows James McCavoy’s Professor X and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto sitting down for a game of chess, a running image that shows the adversarial relationship between the two frenemies who stand on opposite sides of the human/mutant revolution. Picking up ten years after X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Dark Phoenix finds the X-Men in a place they’ve never been before: National heroes! The team embarks on a routine mission into space where things quickly take a turn and they find themselves in a battle with an intergalactic force over team member Jean Grey.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will bring back much of the cast of the new films, which also includes Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), and Evan Peters (Quicksilver). Lamar Johnson of The Next Step has joined the cast in a mystery role and the mutant Dazzler will reportedly play a part in the film.
Simon Kinberg is writing and directing the film, marking his directorial debut. He will also produce alongside Lauren Shuler Donner and Hutch Parker. X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to open in theaters on February 2019.
