Director Paul Feig appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk about what he would’ve done had his Ghostbusters reboot gotten a sequel. The big reveal here is that he would’ve taken the ghostbusting quartet out of New York City and had them fight ghosts around the world. Feig said that he got the initial inspiration for the sequel while he was doing press for the first film.
“I definitely wanted us to go to another country. Because when we were doing the press tour, the international press tour, every country the reporters would come with these drawings or artist renderings of that country’s ghosts. And every country has these really wild ghost stories and ghost characters that they scare kids with or keep people in line with. I really loved the idea of the Ghostbusters going to like Asia. Yeah, so there’s a lot of fun stuff what we could have done,” said Feig.
Despite the fact that there was a plan in place, and the movie even had an end-credits scene that teased the arrival of Zuul, the big bad from the original Ghostbusters, a sequel is unlikely to happen. The film didn’t exactly blow up the box office, and was mired by middling reviews and a slew of online rancor from those who were upset at the film’s very existence. It was also banned in China due to its references to the occult.
Still, it’s an interesting idea, and would’ve opened up a lot of possibilities to deal with other cultures and their relationships with the spirit world. While there’s no definitive word on any future Ghostbusters properties, but there is a German PLAYMOBIL commercial featuring the classic quartet from the original two movies.
