Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote Won’t Show at Cannes

Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote faces further delays

Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has been plagued by production and development woes over the past two decades. After making headway in production last year, it seemed like the long-awaited adaptation was going to finally premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. However, a news report released by France Inter (via The Playlist) informs us that the release date for the troubled film has been delayed possibly indefinitely.

The delay is due to Giliam having signed an agreement with producer Paulo Branco in 2016 for funding, but reportedly that funding never came. Gilliam instead found another producer to get started and now Branco claims that the film can’t be released until he gives permission. Gilliam, on the other hand, feels that the contract was void because there was no funding from Branco. Whichever party is right, the judgment won’t be handed down until June 15, which means the film will miss Cannes.

A classic tale of fantasy and adventure inspired by the legendary protagonist of Miguel De Cervantes’ literary classic Don Quixote, the project is directed by highly-acclaimed filmmaker Terry Gilliam (The Fisher King12 MonkeysBrazilThe Imaginarium of Doctor ParnassusFear and Loathing in Las Vegas) and features a cast that includes Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force AwakensPatersonSilence), previous Gilliam collaborator Jonathan Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean films, The Brothers GrimmBrazilTomorrow Never Dies) as Don Quixote, Stellan Skarsgård (Our Kind of TraitorAvengers: Age of UltronGood Will Hunting), Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of SolaceOblivionTo the Wonder), Joana Ribeiro (Portugal Não Está à VendaA Uma Hora Incerta), Óscar Jaenada (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger TidesThe Cold Light of Day), Jordi Mollà (CriminalIn the Heart of the Sea), Sergi Lopez (Pan’s LabyrinthDirty Pretty ThingsWith a Friend Like Harry) and Rossy de Palma (JulietaThe Flower of my SecretThree Many Weddings).

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote tells the story of a deluded old man who is convinced he is Don Quixote, and who mistakes Toby, an advertising executive, for his trusty squire, Sancho Panza. The pair embark on a bizarre journey, jumping back and forth in time between the 21st and magical 17th century. Gradually, like the infamous knight himself, Toby becomes consumed by the illusory world and unable to determine his dreams from reality. The tale culminates in a phantasmagorical and emotional finale where Toby takes on the mantle of Don Quixote de la Mancha.

Gilliam penned the screenplay with Tony Grisoni, with whom he previously collaborated on Fear and Loathing in Las VegasTideland and The Brothers Grimm. Gerardo Herrero, Mariela Besuievsky, Amy Gilliam, Tornasol Films, Kinology, Recorded Picture Company, Entre Chien et Loup and Ukbar Filmes in association with Alacran Pictures, are producing with the participation of TVE, Movistar +, Eurimages and Wallimage. Amazon Studios has acquired distribution rights for the US, Canada and the UK, and Telemunchen for Germany and Austria.
