Margot Robbie and Elizabeth Banks to team up on The Paper Bag Princess for Universal
Universal Pictures has nabbed the rights to the popular children’s book The Paper Bag Princess, featuring a team-up of Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games trilogy, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Suicide Squad), according to Variety. The book was written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko, and features a princess rescuing a prince. The film is reportedly a possible directing gig for Banks. Katie Silberman (Set it Up) will pen the script.
The Paper Bag Princess was published in 1980 and is the story of Princess Elizabeth, who has her castle and clothing stolen by a dragon on her wedding day. She puts on a paper bag and goes off to fight the dragon and rescue her prince who has been kidnapped. The book has sold more than 10 million copies.
Here is a description of The Paper Bag Princess from Amazon: “Princess Elizabeth is excited to marry dreamy Prince Ronald, but then a dragon attacks the castle, kidnaps her prince, and burns all her clothes. In resourceful and humorous fashion, Elizabeth dons a paper bag, finds and outsmarts the dragon, and rescues Ronald—who is less than pleased at her un-princess-like appearance. What’s a modern-day princess to do? Read this delightful tale to find out.”
The film will be produced by Banks for her Brownstone Productions with Max Handelman. It will also be produced by Robbie and Tom Ackerley through their LuckyChap Entertainment, and Bryan Unkeless from Clubhouse Pictures and Dan Krech. Robbie is expected to star, though according to THR, that isn’t set yet.
