Diane Kruger has been cast in the upcoming Rober Zemeckis film
Diane Kruger (Inglorious Basterds, The Bridge) has been cast in an untitled upcoming Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, The Polar Express) film alongside Steve Carell (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Office), according to THR. The film is based on Jeff Malmberg’s 2010 documentary Marwencol about a man who builds a miniature WWII-era village to help him get over a terrible life event. According to the studio, the film is “one broken man’s fight as he discovers how artistic imagination can restore the human spirit.”
The cast of the film includes Leslie Mann (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Janelle Monae (Friends With Benefits, Hidden Figures) and Eiza Gonzalez (the upcoming Baby Driver and Alita: Battle Angel). Carell will play the man who builds the miniature and according to the site, Zemeckis is creating an entire WWII village in which his character escapes alongside real-world alter egos. Diane Kruger will play Deja Thoris, “the Belgin Witch of Marwen, who in a recurring scenario, revives Carell’s alter-ego every time he is killed by Nazis.”
Monae and Gonzalez will play residents of the village and Mann will play a woman who is interested in Carell’s work. Zemeckis co-wrote the script with Caroline Thompson and will produce through his Universal-based ImageMovers with Jack Rapke, Steve Starkey and Cherylanne Martin.
Diane Kruger recently won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her work in the film In the Fade. She’s known for her roles in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds alongside Brad Pitt, the film Unknown and the FX crime drama series The Bridge.
