Director Christopher McQuarrie has taken to Twitter to announce that the upcoming Mission: Impossible 6 has officially begun production! The sequel, from Paramount Pictures and Skydance, will see the return of Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt along with Rebecca Ferguson and Simon Pegg. It was recently revealed that The Crown and Everest star Vanessa Kirby will have a role as well and that the Man of Steel himself, Henry Cavill, will also feature.
McQuarrie, who previously helmed Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, is once again writing and directing the sequel. McQuarrie noted in a recent interview that even more familiar faces from the franchise will be returning for the upcoming film. His return to the franchise marks the first time a director has helmed more than one Mission: Impossible film. Brian De Palma directed the original adaptation, which was followed by sequels directed by John Woo, J.J, Abrams and Brad Bird.
It was recently revealed that Cruise has been preparing for a sequence in the upcoming film for a year, though it remains to be seen what exactly that scene will entail. McQuarrie previously told Empire that he hopes to delve into an emotional journey for Ethan unlike anything in the previous five movies.
Mission: Impossible 6 is set to debut in theaters July 27, 2018.
