Fede Alvarez is directing The Girl in the Spider’s Web and plans to then return to helm a Don’t Breathe sequel
Word broke earlier this month that Sony Pictures was keen on signing Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe helmer Fede Alvarez to take on their The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequel, The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Chatting with CS today at a press junket for the upcoming Don’t Breathe Blu-ray, Alvarez told us that not only will Spider’s Web be his next project but that he’s already planning on a Don’t Breathe sequel that would see the return of Stephen Lang‘s Blind Man. Neither Spider’s Web nor the Don’t Breathe sequel have been confirmed by their respective studios at this stage.

“Is it all true?” says Alvarez. “Yeah, it’s true. We’re putting together the story right now. Obviously, there’s a book and there’s a script that’s great. Because we write everything I direct, we’re working on that part right now to make it our own and put our imprint in it so it feels like it’s part of our filmography.”
“There’s also going to be more ‘Don’t Breathe,'” adds Alvarez’s producer and co-writer Rodo Sayagues.
“We just started, but we know exactly where it goes,” Alvarez teases. “But we won’t tell you right now. But there will be more ‘Don’t Breathe’ for sure.”
The Girl in the Spider’s Web will adapt author David Lagercrantz’s follow-up novel to Stieg Larsson‘s original “Millennium Trilogy” (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest). Published in 2015 by Alfred A. Knopf, the book is officially described as follows:
Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female superhacker—a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns to Salander for help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. The secret they are both chasing is at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it…
We’ll have the full interview with Alvarez and his longtime producer and co-writer Rodo Sayagues up a little closer to Don’t Breathe‘s home release on November 29, but the pair did confirm that they’re currently looking at ways to make Spider’s Web something uniquely theirs. While the Don’t Breathe sequel doesn’t yet have a green light, Alvarez says that he’s definitely planning on returning to the director’s chair.
