Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia, The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger spoke about the future of the Star Wars films and teased plans for what is beyond the current-announced slate.
“I had a meeting yesterday with Kathy Kennedy and we mapped out — well, we reviewed — the ‘Star Wars’ plans that we have ’til 2020,” Iger said (via TheWrap). “We have movies in development for Star Wars ’til then, and we started talking about what we’re going to do in 2021 and beyond.”
Currently, the Star Wars release schedule includes Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on December 16 of this year, with Star Wars: Episode VIII set for December 15, 2017, the Han Solo spin-off in 2018, and Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019. The mystery film for 2020 will be another standalone movie in the Star Wars universe, for which Iger also confirmed they recently hired a writer. Iger went on to tease that a similar meeting has been had with Marvel Studios as well.
“We had a similar meeting with Marvel a week-and-a-half ago to plot (those films) out, where we’ve got movies in either development or production — some nearing completion — through the end of this decade. (There) we too are beginning to talk about what do we do the next decade, and so on.”
Two years ago, Kevin Feige revealed that one map the studio had for their cinematic universe went all the way to 2028, but plans have likely changed for some of those films, especially after they added the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to their roster. The next Marvel Studios film hitting theaters will be Doctor Strange on November 4, 2016, to be followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5, 2017, Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 7, 2017, Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017, Black Panther on February 16, 2018, Avengers: Infinity War on May 4, 2018, Ant-Man and The Wasp on July 6, 2018, Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019, and the Untitled Avengers 4 on May 3, 2019, with three untitled Marvel Studios films set to premiere on May 1, 2020, July 10, 2020, and November 6, 2020.
