After his debut in Captain America: Civil War, the fan demand for the solo Black Panther movie hit an apex and screenwriter Joe Robert Cole says that the film will pick up the threads left hanging in Civil War.
“Our standalone movie will begin shortly after Civil War ends,” Cole tells /Film. “So we’ll be able to see him mourning and him starting to take command as king of his own nation. Lots of things are going to occur within regards to that. The country will be under threat from inside and out so we’ll learn what Wakanda is, that nation, as the most technologically advanced nation on the planet. Also, as Wakanda’s rise to prominence happens, it will affect the MCU moving forward which is really exciting.”
Cole also offered a proper debunking that he had previously written a script for the Inhumans movie (which has since been removed from Marvel’s schedule), which he says was not the case and that to his knowledge no script even exists for the film.
Chadwick Boseman will star as the title hero in Black Panther and he’s joined by Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Fruitvale Station), who will play Erik Killmonger (a villain in the source material), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as Nakia (a former member of Wakanda’s Dora Milaje, now an agent of Killmonger), and Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead) as Okoye (a member of the Dora Milaje, the wives-in-training for the King of Wakanda).
Ryan Coogler will direct the film which begins in January in Atlanta, Georgia. Black Panther debuts in theaters on February 16, 2018.
