Halle Berry and Daniel Craig Team for LA Riots Movie

Halle Berry and Daniel Craig will headline Deniz Gamze Erguven’s LA Riots movie, Kings

Deniz Gamze Eruven, who made an impressive feature debut with last year’s Academy Award-nominated Mustang, is set to make her English-language debut with Kings. Today, Deadline reports that the LA riots movie has set Daniel Craig to star opposite the previously-attached Halle Berry.

Kings will tell a fictional story of a man (Craig) living in South Central Los Angeles in 1992 who develops a relationship with a single mother (Berry). Following the Rodney King verdict, the city erupted into six days of violence. The Kings story follows the pair as they try to track down Berry’s character’s children and keep them safe.

Kings isn’t the only LA riots movie currently in development. Broad Green Pictures is developing a feature written and directed by John Ridley, the Academy Award-winning 12 Years a Slave scribe. Fellow Academy Award winner Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind, American Gangster) is set to produce. There was also a report last year that Donovan Marsh was developing an LA riots movie titled April 29, 1992 (the date the riots began). Although it was rumored that the film would star Ice Cube and his son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., a statement released on behalf of Cube stressed that his involvement was far from a sure thing.

Although this LA riots movie will mark their first time starring together, Halle Berry and Daniel Craig did headline adjacent entries in the James Bond franchise. The Academy Award-winning actress played Jinx opposite Pierce Brosnan in 2002’s Die Another Day. Craig then took over the franchise in 2006’s Casino Royale.

Halle Berry can next be seen next year in the 20th Century Fox sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Craig, meanwhile, is set to lead the Showtime miniseries Purity.
