Though Aquaman is often seen as a punchline to many, Jason Mamoa is prepared to teach the world about the King of Atlantis and luckily he’s got director James Wan in his corner. Wan, known mostly for directing horror fare like Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring, but also the $1.5 billion-grossing Furious 7, is diving head first into the Aqua-material and his passion is palpable.
Speaking with Cinema Blend, Wan was ecstatic when speaking about the lore and “super cool” villains of Aquaman and went on to talk about how the film will be different from other superhero movies.
“There are so many superhero movies now; I don’t want to make a superhero movie now for the sake of doing it, but there’s something unique to the world of Aquaman. There’s a reason why they’ve never made a movie about this until now, because technology has never allowed us to tackle something this complicated. And so because of that it feels like something different, and that uniqueness is what I’m excited about.”
Aquaman made his first comic book appearance way back in 1941’s “More Fun Comics” #73. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, Aquaman went on to become a founding member of the Justice League of America two decades later. Until now, the character has never made it to the big screen. Aquaman’s sole live-action appearance was as a teen on the WB’s “Smallville.” The character was planned for a spinoff series, “Mercy Reef,” but the property never made it beyond the pilot stage.
The underwater film will also star Amber Heard as Mera, making her debut as the Queen of Atlantis in the upcoming Justice League movie. Aquaman is set for release July 27, 2018.
