Daisy Ridley Confirms Talks for Tomb Raider Reboot

Daisy Ridley confirms talks for Lara Croft role in Tomb Raider

A few weeks ago, rumors hit that Warner Bros. and MGM were making a list of potential Lara Crofts for their Tomb Raider reboot, and that Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley was front-and-center on that list. At the time, no conversations had been held and Ridley was among many others being considered for the role, but now the 23-year-old actress has told The Hollywood Reporter that there “have been conversations” even though she hasn’t officially been offered the role, nor is there a completed script.

“I’m waiting for someone to say ‘I want you, let’s do it’,” Ridley said, adding that she’d be keen for the opportunity. “Absolutely, I’m trying to fill up my calendar,” she added.

Meanwhile, her Star Wars co-star John Boyega also told the publication that he was the one who first recommended she go after the role, which would involve sliding into the tank top once filled by Angelina Jolie.

“I played ‘Tomb Raider’ the game, it’s a new take and I think the movies are going to be based on that version,” Boyega admitted. “But I texted Daisy [and] was like, ‘this is you!’ and ‘you need to get on that because you could be Lara Croft.’ She should be.”

Ridley is currently in the middle of production for Star Wars: Episode VIII, with Star Wars: Episode IX set to follow not long after, so the actress’ timetable for another adventure franchise could be slim.

Roar Uthaug (The Wave) is set to direct the new Tomb Raider movie from a script by Transformers 5 scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

The original Tomb Raider was published in 1996 by the London-based video game company Eidos and became one of the most successful video games of the time. A reboot of the series, telling the origin of Lara Croft, was released in 2013 and sold over 5 million copies. The most recent game, titled Rise of the Tomb Raider, is available now for the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.

Paramount Pictures previously made two movies about the daredevil archaeologist on a series of global missions. The films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life,  starred Angelina Jolie and grossed a combined $432 million at the worldwide box office.
