A Big Trouble in Little China remake is on the way today with The Wrap reporting that San Andreas star Dwayne Johnson will headline as Jack Burton, the role iconically played by Kurt Russell in the 1986 original.
Directed by John Carpenter, the original Big Trouble in Little China was scripted by Gary Goldman and David Z. Weinstein, who envisioned the story as a period western. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai‘s W.D. Richter was brought in to update the story to present day. It ultimately ended up following Burton, an American trucker who, after paying a visit to his friend in San Francisco’s Chinatown, finds himself drawn into a supernatural showdown with the forces of evil.
Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, best known for writing X-Men: First Class, will develop the script for the new film, which will be produced by Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Johnson himself. According to the outlet, the original film is one of Johnson’s all-time favorites.
Johnson headlines San Andreas, in theaters now, opposite Alexandra Daddario, Paul Giamatti and Carla Gugino. Directed by Brad Peyton, the film opened at number one this past weekend and has already grossed more than $114 million worldwide.
