It was announced nearly six years that Legendary Pictures was keen on developing a big screen Jimi Hendrix biopic with the hopes of winning over the artist’s estate, Experience Hendrix. Although that project did not ultimately move forward, Deadline is today reporting that Legendary and Experience Hendrix have worked out a deal for a new big screen take on Hendrix’s life. What’s more, Academy Award nominee Paul Greengrass is in talks to direct.
Hendrix, who tragically died in 1970 at age 27, nevertheless managed to achieve artistic immortality. He’s widely considered to be among the greatest — if not the greatest — guitarists of all time. Because of the involvement of his estate, Legendary will have access to Hendrix’s full catalogue of recordings.
Greengrass most recently directed Captain Phillips and is set to next return to the Bourne franchise for a still untitled fifth film that will offer the return of Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. Look for that film to hit the big screen July 29, 2016.
Scott Silver (8 Mile, The Fighter) will provide the screenplay for the still-untitled Hendrix film, which will be produced by Thomas Tull, Peter Afterman, Janie Hendrix, Jon Jashni and John McDermott. Josh Bratman and Jillian Share will serve as executive producers.
