UPDATE: Variety has added that iconic actor Kurt Russell, who co-stars in the global blockbuster Furious 7, is also in final negotiations to join the cast in an undisclosed role.
The 23-year-old O’Brien became a breakout star in 2011 when he was cast in MTV’s “Teen Wolf,” and earlier this year, he had been rumored as a possible frontrunner for Sony Pictures’ new Spider-Man (which he debunked soon afterwards). O’Brien will play Caleb Holloway, the youngest crew member of the Deepwater Horizon that survived despite losing much of the crew.
The film reunites Wahlberg with his Lone Survivor director Peter Berg, and Emmy-winning actress Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) was also recently announced as joining the cast.
The film is currently scheduled for a release on September 30, 2016.
