Guy Ritchie’s Knights of the Round Table (formerly King Arthur) has added Eric Bana to its cast. According to a report today from Variety, the Deliver Us From Evil star will play Uther Pendragon, the father of Charlie Hunnam’s once and future king. He joins a cast that also includes Astrid Berges-Frisbey as Guinevere with Jude Law still in talks to play the film’s antagonist. Djimon Hounsou’s was previously said to have been cast as a Merlin-like figure, but his name is mysteriously absent from the trade.
Ambitiously planned to potentially span six films, Knights of the Round Table will offer a re-imagining of Arthurian legend. Believed to have been a 6th century King, Arthur defended Britain against Saxon invaders. The key source material for the film will be Thomas Mallory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur,” published in 1485 as a compilation of French and English tales.
Bana, whose credits include films like Hulk, Munich and Star Trek, can next be seen in The Finest Hours opposite Ben Foster, Casey Affleck, Chris Pine and Holliday Grainger.
Already scheduled for a July 22, 2016 release, King Arthur was written by Joby Harold, who is producing with Akiva Goldsman, Tory Tunnell and Ritchie himself. Cate Adams and Niija Kuykendall are overseeing for Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow.
