After nearly 15 years of rumors, Zoolander 2 is finally moving forward at Paramount Pictures. We learned late last year that Penelope Cruz had signed on for a leading role and, today, EW confirms that Christine Taylor will also be back, reprising her role as journalist Matilda Jeffries.
“I can tell you that I’m involved,” she tells the outlet, “but that’s all I can say. I can tell you it’s happening, but I can’t tell you where Matilda’s at and where their relationship is at. It’s all top secret!”
Justin Theroux is attached to direct the much-anticipated comedy sequel with Ben Stiller (Taylor’s real-life husband, who also directed the original) set to reprise his role as dimwitted male supermodel Derek Zoolander. Additionally, Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson are all-but-confirmed to return as Mugatu and Hansel, respectively.
The original film had the unfortunate release date of September 28, 2001 and, finding a nation not quite ready for laughter, it grossed only $60 million worldwide. When the film hit DVD, however, it became a fast hit and plans for a sequel have been discussed for years.
Stiller will produce Zoolander 2 alongside Stuart Cornfeld.
