Matthew McConaughey to Voice Illumination’s 2016 Animated Feature

Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club, Interstellar) will, according to a story today at The Hollywood Reporter, headline the voice cast of Illumination Entertainment’s still untitled 2016 release, set to be directed by Garth Jennings (Son of Rambow, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).

Details on the mysterious feature are few but, according to previous reports, it will be an original, animated musical comedy about courage, competition and carrying a tune. Jennings is supplying the screenplay as well.

McConaughey, who also received critical acclaim for his role as Detective Rust Cohle on HBO’s “True Detective,” can next be seen starring opposite Naomi Watts and Ken Watanabe in Gus Van Sant’s Sea of Trees. He’s also about to begin shooting The Free State of Jones opposite Gugu Mbatha Raw with The Hunger Games‘ Gary Ross directing.

This Illumination project won’t be McConaughey’s only animated voice work in 2016, however. McConaughey joins Ralph Fiennes, Charlize Theron, Brenda Vaccaro, Rooney Mara and Art Parkinson in the voice cast for LAIKA’s August 19, 2016 feature, Kubo and the Two Strings, the debut directorial feature from LAIKA founder Travis Knight.

Illumination, meanwhile, will next release their Despicable Me spinoff, Minions, hitting theaters July 10, 2015.
