Sony is Planning a Female-Led Spider-Man Spin-Off, Venom Potentially Coming in 2017

Fresh off the heels of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige saying he hoped a female led film in his cinematic universe happened “sooner rather than later,” Deadline brings word that Sony is planning a female-led superhero film set in the universe of their “Amazing Spider-Man” franchise.

With The Sinister Six spin-off already set for release in 2016, the trade reports that Sony has hired Lisa Joy Nolan (“Burn Notice”) to pen the script for the film, which they’re targeting for a 2017 release date. Which character it will focus on remains to be seen, but a number of super-powered women call the pages of “Spider-Man” home, ranging from Black Cat (played by Felicity Jones in The Amazing Spider-Man 2) to Silver Sable or even Spider-Woman.

The site also reports that plans for the proposed Venom spin-off are still moving forward and that the rumored title for the film is “Venom Carnage.” A 2017 release date is also being eyed for the Alex Kurtzman-directed film. Previously set for release on June 10, 2016, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been pushed back to 2018 with no specific date set at the time.
