View Full Version : Spyware

Every time I log onto the site, I get a message asking me to agree to install GAIN (Gator), a known spyware program.
Even though I say no or cancel every time, it gets a little annoying. And I think it's installing anyway, because I'm getting all kinds of popups on the main page, as well as links to ebay off of actor/actresses names.
I understand the site needs money, and therefore advertising is a "price" to be paid.
I might be the only one getting spyware off of this site. Maybe I'm getting it from somewhere else.

The GAIN popups do not install anything if you cancel it, I guarantee that. If you're getting weird other popups you might have gotten spyware onto your computere from another site. I would suggest downloading either ad-aware or SpyBot to get rid of it.

You mean the links in news items? That's just a new way of advertising. I don't see how that's bothersome.

I never said it was bothersome...I was just wondering if something that has been installed was doing it.

Yeah, I'm gonna go run a new search right now.
Bad thing was I got that AIM virus a month or two or back. My homepage got changed to a disgusting porn site no matter how I changed it. I finally got rid of it downloading "Hijack This!", but I might have gotten it back.
Thanks for reminding me.

If you are getting pop ups for that, it is more than likely from spyware already on your system. I dont have a problem with that. Like Rogue mentioned, go with ad-aware or another good spyware remover. Once you download it make sure you update it first and then run it. It should fix that problem. If you surf heavily, do it about once every two weeks to take care of that crap.
Also, if you run Kazaa, you might have to make sure you dont remove a piece of its software because part of Kazaa is actually spyware so if you remove it, say good bye to kazaa untill you reinstall it.

Something's definitely installed, searched on the web and it's named CommonName.
Spybot won't get rid of it itself, neither will HijackThis... I'm going to have to hack my registry. :(

Did you try Ad-Aware, skink?

Yep. I think I got rid of it last night though.
Ran Windows in safe mode, ran through Spybot S&D, it could clean it up, then ran HijackThis to get rid of the registry entries, and finally found the offending folder in my C drive and deleted it manually.
Sorry for accusing you Mirko. Once this spyware/virus started changing my homepage to porn pages, I knew it was basically the same thing as before.
