Now that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have officially announced that 19-year-old English actor/dancer Tom Holland (The Impossible, In the Heart of the Sea) will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, let’s take a look at some recent Instagram postings the rising star made showing off some of the acrobatic skills.
Holland beat out heavy contenders, such as Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game) and Charlie Plummer (“Boardwalk Empire”), to star as webslinger Peter Parker in the next Spider-Man film, which is set to hit theaters on July 28, 2017 under the direction of Jon Watts (Cop Car). In addition, he is expected to make his debut as Spidey in a supporting capacity for Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War, which opens May 6, 2016.
Marvel and Sony Pictures and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both the actor and the director. The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in The Impossible, “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming In the Heart of the Sea, and by a series of complex screen tests.
